About NALC
Branch Charters
The granting of charters today is governed by Article 8 of the NALC Constitution. Charters have been an essential part of maintaining the union’s structure since its founding. Article II, Section 3 of NALC’s first Constitution refers to a charter “duly granted by the national association,” which gives the local association or branch “all the power and privileges of a local association working under the jurisdiction of the National Association.”
According to the NALC membership database, the 1st charter was issued to Branch 1 in Detroit in 1886. The charter dates of all current NALC branches are listed here. Through this listing you can chart the growth of the NALC in numbers and geographic reach in the years since its founding.
NALC branches that wish to obtain a replacement charter should contact the Supply Department. A replacement costs $8.
